Jose - main character - intelligent, wants to be free from slavery. Originally does not receive scholarship to academy. Wants to learn and knows that it is a privilege to be educated (throws rock at women who had him wash the dishes and be late for school). Accused of cheating. Teacher apologizes for accusation and Jose receives full tuition and board to school. When a person dies, says "They are returning to Africa"
Ma Tine - grandmother - refuses to let Jose work in the fields, wants his future to not be confined to the sugar cane fields. Does all she can for Jose so that his future will be better, even move into the capital which she hates. She is weak, but carries on for Jose, when he no longer needs her, she goes back to la Rue and dies.
Medouze - old man - wise old man. father was from Africa. Would use a story telling technique to make sure that Jose was paying attention. made an amulet for Jose, which he kept with him throughout the story. Extremely wise (could use some quotes to give example... I forgot what he said)
Leopold - Mulatre - was considered dirty when he hung out with les noirs, but was not socially accepted by les bekes. father refused to give Leopold his sur name, but gave some land to try and compensate. Father never truely accepted his son, which is sad because his father chose to marry une noire. Leopold had a little identity crisis.

I plan on writing about Jose's grandma. I am sayin everything you said but also including that she is strong hardworking strict and determined to provide for Jose. She views his dreams as her own and will do anything for him. That is why she moves to the city. She doesn't give up. She respects all. She is tough. She cares about her community which is why she is concerned when medouze isn't there. She inspires Jose. There's a lot to say about her.
I would also add to Jose his dreams. And that's he's a typical curious and mischievous child. He respects his elders like he should. He doesn't quite understand why he doesn't work in the fields like everyone else but only asks about it once. He is wise for his age. He too is positive for example comforting himself with medouzrs and his grandmothers death by stating that they are home and happy in Africa.
I'm going to write about Jose and Leopold.
For Jose I plan on writing basically what everyone else is saying. I think I'm going to talk a little about how he wants to defy the boundaries of his race. I might also write that I think he feels a little guilty that he can't work in the fields and that he gets to continue school while Tortilla (sp?) does not.
For Leopold I'm going to write about how he doesn't necessarily fit in with either race. I also plan on mentioning that he has a bit of an identity crisis which causes him to rebell and that all he wants from his father is the one thing he does not get, his name.
**It's possible I misspelled a lot of words in this because I'm a horrible speller in French and in English and I typed this quickly, so I'm sorry. **
Merci beaucoup and j'espere que cet t'aide aussi.
